The Surgical Technician (ST) works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and indirect supervision of the Unit Manager. The S! T contributes to the on-going plan of care for the patient by observation and preparation of surgical instrumentation. The ST implements, evaluates and documents patient care as directed by the RN. The ST participates in the orientation of new employees.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible and accountable to assist with development and implementation of the Plan of Care of
assigned patients during the designated shift. Implements interventions based on the plan of care and
assists in the evaluation of patient progress toward established goals.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to assigned procedures
- Demonstrates knowledge of techniques of various surgeons for various procedures
- identifies and prepares surgical supplies and instrumentation of assigned patients
- Able to assemble and troubleshoot all equipment as nec! essary for procedure.
- Prioritizing delegated cares for assigned patients with consideration for appropriate utilization of human and material resources
- Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile technique.
- Utilizes recognized infection control principles in daily practice
- Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection, as evidenced by practice
- Demonstrates knowledge of operating room sanitation and assists in its maintenance.
- Performs surgical scrub according to department policies.
- Monitors skin integrity and communicates condition to circulating RN.
- Handles all surgical specimens appropriately.
- Anticipates needed equipment and supplies for procedures and communicates these needs to
- support staff in a timely manner
Assists with the orientation and education of staff and students
