Knowledge of principles, practices, laws, and rules pertaining to the custody and handling of various forms of police evidence, including chain of custody of records; best practices for packaging and storage of property and evidence; stock room and inventory control procedures; general law enforcement procedures and policies; spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Skill in using a variety of advisory data and police information systems, including state criminal and motor vehicle codes, police reports, law enforcement databases, warrant information, victim/witness statements, criminal complaints, statistical reports, and police procedures and policies; operating modern computers and related software.
Ability to analyze, receive, categorize, record, store, and maintain property and evidence; follow oral and written directions; learn, comprehend, and apply departmental policies and rules, laws, and other regulations; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; input appropriate accurate information into a computerized inventory system; prepare, maintain, and accurately complete records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
Education/Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Special Conditions & Requirements: Possess and maintain physical condition required to perform essential functions of the classification which include the physical ability to lift, pull, lower, and carry irregularly-shaped items and items weighing up to 50 pounds; bend in all directions; climb stairs and ladders; stoop; kneel; reach; twist; squeeze with arms and hands; stand for extended periods of time.
License & Certificates: A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent required at time of appointment; valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Communicable Disease, and First Aid Certificates from authorized providers, as determined by the Management Services Department, within one month of appointment. All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.
