The Good Samaritan Cancer Center Nurse Practitioner, under the direction of! the physician and in collaboration with the medical oncology team, initiates and manages the integrated cancer treatment for patients at various developmental levels in a caring, timely, and cost-effective manner.

Job Functions:
1. Obtains a pertinent medical history, patient profile, chief complaint, history of present illness and past medical history, social and family history and a review of body systems. Performs complete physical examination.

2. Differentiates between normal and abnormal information obtained from the history, physical and screening examination. Makes preliminary interpretation of the diagnostic tests with consultation necessary. Develops initial impression as to the severity, etiology and immediacy of the patient problem based upon data obtained from history, physical, laboratory, and x-ray studies. Establishes a diagnosis of common problems and consults with the physician as appropriate. Develops and formulates a health m! anagement plan. Applies established therapeutic practices to t! he patient’s problems.

3. Initiates routine patient orders and works under established protocols, prescribes medications, acts as an agent for and in the name of the collaborating physician(s).

4. Obtains laboratory specimens such as blood, sputum, pleural fluid, etc. Performance and interpretation of electrocardiogram, urinalysis, occult blood determination, screening spirometry, hematocrit, hemoglobin, etc. Orders other laboratory tests such as x-ray diagnostic studies as appropriate.

5. Performs and will assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as suture removal, routine wound care, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, and other procedures as delegated by the collaborating physician.

6. Passes nasogastric and urethral catheters as required and obtains specimens from catheters.

7. Manages common acute conditions of cancer patients such as paryngitis, stomatitis, diarrhea, dermatitis, neutropenia, and anemia relate! d to the care of the patient. Coordinates patient care efforts (rehabilitation, pain control, end of life issues) for oncology patients.

8. Writes specific orders under physician direction. May prescribe Schedule II controlled substance used for pain control in the name of the collaborating physician.

9. Provides individual patient education and counseling. Participates in support groups and organizations of this type.

10. In emergency situations, with no other physician present, the Nurse Practitioner will function under established physician assigned protocols for the management of pathologic conditions of the patient. Notifies the collaborating physician as soon as possible. Responds to emergency situations that may include Code Blue, Fire, and disaster situations.

11. Provides supervision of outpatient therapy services in the absence of physician.

12. Participates in the education of other health professionals and the general! public by presenting lectures and instruction pertaining to cancer and! patient follow-up care.

13. Assists in and/or conducts clinical research projects including collection, organizing and interpreting data. Assists in establishing and maintaining a patient database.

14. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of Medical Oncology by reading books, journals and other literature and attending seminars and conferences and the like.

15. Demonstrates the ability to be an intricate part of the health care team, working closely with clinicians and hospital staff.

16. Frequent contact with patient service areas including contact with physicians, patients, and staff requiring the ability to communicate and influence people using tactful consideration, sometimes in difficult or disturbing situations.

17. Maintain patient confidentiality.

18. Maintain professional demeanor at all times.

19. Attend and participate in staff meetings.

20. Attend any educati! onal seminars as requested.

Qualifications

Education

:

Nurse Practitioner degree from an accredited school is required.

License/Certification

:

Must possess a non-restricted Nebraska license.

Must possess current, valid federal and state narcotics certificates.

Current BLS certification required.
