KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
This position is located at the VA Medical Center (VAMC), Omaha, NE. The Lead Medical Supply Technician is a non-supervisory employee who is responsible to ensure that the team completes its tasks effectively and efficiently and meets management goals and objectives. The lead uses a variety of coordinating, coaching, facilitating, consensus-building, and planning techniques.

Duties would include: Distribute and balance workload and tasks among team members, fill in for SPD staff when necessary, keep in touch with the status and progress of work, and make adjustment in accordance with the established priorities, answer questions from the team members, maintain records of work accom! plishments and prepare reports, update supervisors on performance, progress, and subject-matter issues, assist with the preparation of budget reports, review completed work to assure requirements are met, and train and coach team members. You will also identify and receive contaminated surgical instruments, trays, surgical sets, suction equipment, hypothermia machines, IV poles, wheelchairs carts, endoscopes, power drills and saws, etc., prioritize instruments required for surgical procedures in the Operating Room, select proper methods for pre-cleaning, cleaning, and disinfecting all patient care items, disassemble and inspect items for damage or missing components, operate equipment and instruments to ensure proper functioning prior to sterilization or redistribution, test suction machined to verify acceptable vacuum, and initiate repair work orders for malfunctioning equipment. Other duties would include inspection, disassembly, cleaning, and routine maintenance of surgi! cal devices, assemble instruments and other surgical items and kits by ! selecting the appropriate items, trays, instruments, and arranging them in the correct manner, inspect instruments for damage, use aseptic techniques and proper wrapping methods, inspect instruments for proper functioning, wear proper dress attire at all times, efficiently schedule operation of sterilizers to permit cooling or aeration of sterilized items prior to use, select the correct sterilization methods, label sterilized items with a control number and expiration date, review and sign sterilizer recording charts, maintain records for three years, quarantines implants for forty eight hours before release, assemble and load supplies on shelves or carts, and maintains sterile and non-sterile linen inventory.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied emplo! yment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: Second Shift: 2pm-10:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience, to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the Lead Medical Supply Technician. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, Grade-06. Examples of Specialized Experience include: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating condition! s of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, prep! aration, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker ( A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, salary/grade level, and the number of hours a week spent in such employment).

GS-07 Education: You must possess successfully completed one full year of graduate education with courses directly related to the work of the Lead Medical Supply Technician position. This education must ! have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 9 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the six months of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a one year of full-time study at the school attended). OR

GS-07 Combination of Experience and Education: You must possess equivalent combinations of specialized experience (as described above) and successfully completed graduate education (as described above). QUALIFY RANKING FACTOR:
A Quality Ranking Factor! has been requested by the facility to help determine which of the basically qualified applicants are likely to be better qualified for a position. The quality ranking factor for this position is: Knowledge of the techniques needed to assign, coordinate, direct, and lead efficient operations in a sterile processing environment.

  • Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening , but may be used as ranking criteria. Applicants with higher proficiency levels may rank above those with lower proficiency levels on a quality ranking factor.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques, including sterile processing.
2. A bility to operate sterilization equipment.

3. Ability to assemble, wrap, and store reusable medical equipment (RME).

4. Knowledge of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) and Quality Control standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
You will be required to stand, bend, pull, push, lift, and carry supplies, materials, and equipment. Work is performed in a temperature controlled environment. Employee must be able to observe safety precautions while working on wet floors, around a variety of cleaning agents, chemicals, and around the steam, plasma, and gas equipment. Employee is in contact with many types of hospital diseases and is required to wear protective clothing and use universal precautions. The employee may potentially be exposed to Ethylene Oxide a minimum of 30 days per year.
