DUTIES:
The Medical Supply Technician is assigned to the
Sterile Processing Services(SPS) section of the VA Medical Center located
in Omaha, Ne.
The Medical Supply
Technician will provide decontamination, preparation, and Sterilization
operations and support of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) for the medical
center.
The duties may include; but may
not be limited to:

Provides sterilization, preparation, and decontamination support
for the medical center.
·
Disassembles Reusa! ble Medical Equipment Items
·
Cleans Reusable Medical Equipment Items.
·
Examines condition of instrumentation and equipment.
·
Operates medical equipment to determine whether it operates with
normal adverse wear.
·
Sends malfunctioning or damaged equipment to repair or salvage
unit.
·
Assembles/Packages/Wraps/Sterilization supply items.
·
Examines items to ensure that gross contamination has been
removed.
·
Assembles set and trays in a prudent manner that will permit
effective penetration of the
sterilizing medium, including Prevac and Gravity
steam sterilization, Ethylene Oxide (ETO), Sterrad sterilization using Hydrogen
Peroxide Gas Plasma Technology, or immediate use sterilization while incorporating
appropriate chemical indicators/integrators along with associated quality control
bacteriological te! st (Bacillus Stearothermophilus) for evaluation of steam.

Receives/Stores/Controls supply item stock.
·
Provides inventory support and physically maintains stock at
secondary inventory in SPS.
·
Selects correct sterilizing medium and cycles, and operates multiple
industrial sterilizers to
accomplish correct sterilization parameters.

Schedule: Monday - Friday; 2:00PM - 12:30AM
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to a appointment.
Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
SPECIALIZED EXPEREINCE FOR THE GS-5:
Applicants mu! st document at least one (1) year of specialized experience. Specialized experience may include: experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers, etc. This experience must be equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. NOTE:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per wee! k. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually ! spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-5:
Successfully completed a four (4) year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in an accredited college or university with courses related to this position such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-5:
Equivalent combination of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work is performed in various
settings-office, preparation, decontamination, ! sterile storage areas, and in
other services and departments. The M! edical Supply Technician may be required
to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. The employee
is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other
injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and
walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting if supply
packages (occasionally weighing as much as fifty (50) pounds). All SPD staff
are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when assigned to all
areas within SPS, operations as well as any of the clinical and operating room
environment where appropriate Personal Protective Equipment is deemed necessary
while performing duties.
