PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
1. Encourages staff development and a supportive work environment to enhance staff professionalism and clinical competency. 2. Assesses professional development and clinical competency needs of each nursing staff member in designated clinical area and creates clinical development plan (orientation or ongoing clinical development) for each bedside clinical RN. 3. Reviews clinical development plan on an ongoing basis with employee and Unit Manager to assess progress and determine appropriate resource allocation. 4. Maintains a strong collaborative relationship with Nurse Educators to achieve the following. a. Assists Unit Manager and Preceptor Selection Committee to identify appropriate preceptors. b. Facilitates, organizes and / or conducts preceptor program. c. Conducts unit based in-services. d. Conducts clinical nursing education programs. e. Organizes unit based competency orientation programs for new staff. f. Develops competency based learning using a variety of teaching / learning methods to meet orientation and annual competency requirements, as well as, additional educational needs that may arise. 5. Provides direct staff mentoring experiences with each new employee to include but not limited to: a. Nursing Process b. Accountability for plan of care and patient outcomes. c. Communication and Collaboration with all healthcare team members. d. Professional accountability. 6. Exhibits sound clinical judgment and decision making. a. Shares clinical expertise and knowledge throughout all appropriate unit based opportunities. b. Participates in community activities based on area of clinical expertise and practice. 7. Provides leadership for clinical initiatives, performance improvement, and other activities to improve patient care. a. Participates in ongoing QI activities to enhance patient care. b. Indentifies new opportunities for clinical initiatives and staff development opportunities. c. Participates in updating clinical policies and procedures as appropriate to clinical expertise. 8. Acts as a competency valuator in the unit specific competency assessment plan. 9. Works collaboratively with the Unit Manager and Charge Nurses to identify opportunities to develop both individual and collective nursing practice in a designated area. 10. Collaborates with Unit Manager to communicate RN staff competency and continuing educational opportunities. 11. Demonstrates ability to collaborate with other disciplines in the hospital. 12. Demonstrates ability to use research to guide clinical practice. a. Provides research based articles to staff to enhance clinical practice. b. Participates in clinical research projects when appropriate. c. Incorporates research findings related to area of specialty to clinical practice, educational programs, and to facilitate positive clinical outcomes. 13. Demonstrates professional growth by seeking educational opportunities to enhance own knowledge base. a. Evaluates the opportunity to attend a national education seminar annually. b. Attends mandatory educational requirements to maintain licensure. c. Attends annual educational in-services required by the hospital to maintain core competencies for employment. d. Attends and participates in departmental meetings / in-services. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
